Our Founder
My name is Mutindi.
I use this name because it is the name I was given at birth — the name my parents chose for me, with intention and with love. It was never meant to translate, to fit a mould, or to carry the weight of another culture's naming traditions. Not because those traditions lack value, but because this name was never meant to be anything other than what it is: wholly and completely mine.
There is something quietly powerful about a name that needs no equivalent, no adaptation, no explanation. Mutindi stands on its own — rooted in where I come from, in the people who raised me, and in the community that has always known me by it. Choosing to carry it into this space is an intentional act — a return to self, to roots, and to authenticity. It reflects the heart behind this brand: honouring origin, identity, and meaning without dilution.
It is the name my family calls me, the one my earliest friends in the village and in primary school knew me by, and the one my community still uses today. In my culture, names carry deep meaning and connection — so much so that people refer to my parents as Mama Mutindi and Baba Mutindi, mother and father of Mutindi. My name became part of their identity, just as their love and guidance shaped mine.
The Name Behind the Brand
When it came time to name this company, there was never a question.
Mila and Luka are the names that matter most to me — my children, my legacy. Their names may appear simple, but each carries enormous significance, history, and meaning.
Mila means culture in Swahili, in Kamba — my tribe — and in Embu, my husband's tribe. It represents tradition, identity, and the values passed down through generations.
Luka carries a variation of his grandfather's name — a man who was larger than life, yet the gentlest giant I have ever known. His name holds memory, strength, kindness, and continuity.
In a way that feels beautifully full circle, my friends and family back home now call me Mama Mila. Just as my own name became part of my parents' identity, my children's names have become part of mine.
